For Christmas I received a recipe book (from Kitson) on how to make dozens of traditional and inspired recipes for grilled cheese. I'm no chef; however, this was the perfect gift considering that I would marry a grilled cheese if I could.
I recently decided to make "The Monte Cristo," which is as a classic American diner sandwich: french toast stuffed with slice turkey (or ham), melted cheese and served with jam on the side.
The result? A deliciously sweet and perfect breakfast sandwich. I didn't follow the recipe exactly -- I used heavy whipping cream instead of milk, and both Emmental and Swiss cheese. I don't normally eat ham, so I chose to use smoked turkey. For the jam, I chose my favorite, raspberry. This sandwich was extremely rich and heavy, so the next time I try this recipe I might choose a lighter cheese and use milk instead (as the recipe suggests). Overall, I was really pleased with the results, especially since I'm usually terrible in the kitchen. My picture even closely resembled the one depicted in the book, which of course gave me a huge confidence boost. I highly recommend this sandwich if you're looking for a filling breakfast and a nostalgic throwback to childhood days.
Warning: be prepared for a food coma shortly after consuming.
