Venturing out of my little West LA bubble is both exhilarating and refreshing. This past weekend, my friend Emma and I decided to head over to Grand Central Market, a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. Although I've lived here practically my entire life, I still have so many places on my bucket list, and I'm glad I finally got to cross this off my list!
Grand Central Market has been around for nearly a century (it first opened in 1917!), so there's a great sense of history, which I love. LA's most unique architecture, in my opinion, is housed Downtown. There are so many different architectural styles, from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco. Walking through DTLA makes me feel like I'm living The Day of the Locust. Grand Central Market is definitely a gem, nestled in some pretty crazy hustle and bustle. This market features dozens of different vendors and food stalls, which properly reflect LA's diversity and multiculturalism. Wexler's Deli, Berlin Currywurst, Tacos Tumbras A Tomas, and China Cafe are just a few of the many diverse food options. All under one roof there's a Jewish deli, authentic currywurst from Berlin, tacos and chinese food! What's not to love? The rest of the market also has fresh produce, which I hear is very reasonably priced.
LA is usually pretty calm and serene; however, Grand Central Market was far from that. There were tons of people and long lines. One of my main reasons for coming was to eat at Eggslut, the famous egg-centric food stand, with mouth-watering breakfast sandwiches and omelettes. The line was over two hours long though, so we opted for Valerie's Bakery & Cafe instead. If you're planning on coming here, do prepare for crowds.
For our dessert, we each picked a scoop of ice cream from McConnell's. This was definitely the highlight of the entire experience -- it was absolutely delicious. For $4.75, you get a "single" scoop, which is actually two flavors. We both got the seasonal flavor: Figueroa Mountain Davy Brown Ale & Butter Brittle. This beer-infused ice cream was exceptional. Emma also got the Toasted Coconut Almond Chip, and I got the Churros Con Leche. Both were really good as well; I loved the little bits of churro. I highly recommend McConnell's Fine Ice Creams.
I'm excited to visit this gem again! Hopefully, one day I'll try Eggslut.
